Booking is making a reservation on a library item--scheduling for a future specified time. For example, an instructor may book a DVD for classroom use weeks in advance, or a student may reserve a camera for an upcoming project or event.
The item continues in open circulation, but due dates are shortened when necessary to ensure it's available for the booking.
